Temperature monitoring by employers
Recent changes in government legislation have led to major U.S companies starting routine fever detection of employees. The U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) gave employers the green light to take employees' temperatures to try and ward off the spread of the corona virus in guidance updated March 18, 2020. Major companies such as Walmart, Amazon,Taco Bell and McDonalds have already started and more will follow.
The UK has been relatively slow to respond to temperature monitoring. This combined with low levels of Corona virus testing by the authorities is leading to higher rates of infection and unfortunately more deaths compared to countries which prioritised testing.
Fever isn't the only symptom of Corona virus infection. However, in absence of lab tests and on advice from WHO, NHS, and PHE, we can definitely play a part in the fight against COVID19 by monitoring more peoples temperature and by making more people aware of their symptoms.
